Florence Conrad was born on December 4, 1941. She was raised in Forks of Salmon. After graduating from Yreka High School she joined the U.S. Army. Florence returned home to Siskiyou County where she met and married Willis Conrad Jr. Together they had six children: April, Peggy Sue, Melodee, Tonner, Shawnna & Karla. Along with three step-children, Carol Ann, Irene and Willis III, Willis Jr and Florence adopted and raised three grandchildren, Tyler, Rosie and Brianna. Florence also helped to raise her nephews and niece Dalene. She adored them and was always very proud of them.
Forence was a proud grandmother, aunt and mother, and was a strong leader and positive role model in the community. She served on the Karuk Tribal Council and was a very inspirational and hardworking woman with strong values and a passion for helping others. Florence and her colorful humor and brutal honesty live on through her children: Irene, April, Melodee, Shawnna, Karla, Tyler, Rosie and Brianna; her grandchildren Melinda, Chelsea, Misti, Travis, Cody, Stenina, Aja, Brent, Emma, Jessica, Brandon and Mariah; and her great grandson Tré. Florence loved all her grandchildren and was very supportive and inspirational to them, especially those attending college: Chelsea (Humboldt State Univ.), Aja (University of California-Berkeley), Jessica (Santa Barbara City College) and Brent (University of Oregon.)
Florence passed on to her next life on March 4, 2012 at her home in Somes Bar, joining those who preceded her in death: her husband Willis Jr., daughter Peggy Sue, son Tonner and grandson Harley. She will be remembered by her commitment to bettering and serving her community as well as her unconditional love for her family.
Services were held on March 9, 2012. She was buried next to her husband at the family cemetery in Somes Bar.
