David Lee Devine passed away at the Madrone Hospice House on April 15, 2012. David’s passing was difficult for his family, but as usual, David continued to be strong battling his cancer till the very end. He remains a “Hero” to his kids, grandkids, and all who knew him.
David was born to Charles and Marie Devine on January 16, 1935 in Los Angeles, California. David was the baby of the family with 2 brothers and 1 sister. As a young boy, David and his family lived in various towns. He attended Arcata High School and enjoyed the normal activities of any young man; hunting, fishing, camping, etc. If it had something to do with the outdoors, David was in his element.
David served in the United States Air Force. During that time, he met and married the love of his life, Patricia Ann Gibbs. The two were wed in Florida on April 7, 1957. David and Pat had four beautiful daughters, Monica, Andrea, Stephanie, and Jessica. David was a huge role model for his children, always being the leader of his family. He enjoyed countless hours teaching them of the outdoors, being a 4H leader, or simply attending any activity they may have been involved in. He was the true definition of “HUSBAND” and “DAD.”
David supported his family for 33 years by building roads for the US Forest Service. He thoroughly enjoyed his job because it was a way for him to be outdoors and make a living at the same time! His true calling came much later in life though when he was employed with the Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Department. He was employed with them for 18 years as a Reserve Deputy. He was a member of various parts of the department including the Special Response Team and Siskiyou County Search and Rescue. As difficult as his job was, he still conducted himself with strength, pride, and was most often seen with a huge smile on his face!
His character and community involvement was appreciated throughout Siskiyou County. As such, he held many different positions and received several awards. From 1985 – 1988 he was President of Siskiyou County Search & Rescue, he assisted with creating our local Siskiyou County Chapter of the American Red Cross, 1998 he received Reserve Peace Officer of the year, and in 2001 he received the Meritorious Service Award from the Siskiyou County Sheriff.
Aside from all of his public accomplishments, David’s most impressive accomplishment came when his wife Pat became seriously ill. When she was no longer able to care for herself, David did 100% of her caretaking. A task many would never endure, David did and did it well. Sadly, Pat passed away just shy of their 53rd wedding anniversary.
David was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, sister and wife.
David leaves his four daughters and son-in-laws, Monica & Phil Worthington of England, Andrea & Ron McCarroll of Weed, Stephanie & Steve Cone of Grenada, and Jessica & Scott Crowder of Sparks, NV; his 7 grandchildren; and his 5 great-grandchildren.
At David’s request, an informal party will be held with his family; a time to share fun memories and stories. For directions, please call Jessica at 775-233-9724.
If you would like to make memorial contributions in David’s name please do so to the Siskiyou County Search & Rescue, ATTN: Celeste Fowler, 305 Butte Street, Yreka, CA 96097.
