Andrew Charles Hughes

Andrew “Andy” Charles Hughes died at home on January 11, 2018 at the age of 84. Andy was born on February 27, 1933 in Weaverville, California to Virgil Raymond Hughes and Dora Belle Monday. He met the love of his life, Linda Ella Nielsen, in 1959 in Big Piney, Wyoming. They were married October 21, 1959. They had 58 amazing years together. Andy moved his family to Siskiyou County in 1962 and resided in Happy Camp till November 1975 when they moved to Yreka and was a resident till his passing. He was known and loved by many in Siskiyou County. He was a logger by trade and had a love for the woods. From work to play the mountains is where you would find him. He loved to take his family fishing and camping. Often making a special trip to McCloud Reservoir or China Crater to take one of his visiting children, grandchildren, or friend on a fishing trip. Hunting was a life joy of his and he has left many friends across Oregon and California with his annual elk hunting trips to Eastern Oregon. Andy never met a stranger. He had a smile and a handshake for everyone he met. He was the person people would call for a helping hand fixing this or fixing that. If you ask around not many would say they have never heard of Andy Hughes and more than likely will have a story to tell of how he helped them. He served his community and was called upon at various times from coaching Little League Baseball and Babe Ruth to helping install the scoreboard at the high school football field. Andy had a large family whom loved him deeply and he loved even more. Andy’s children always came first. All it took was one call of “I need you, Daddy” and he would drop everything be there. Didn’t matter if it was simply driving across town or flying across the country, if one of Andy’s kids needed him he was there. Andy is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Linda Ella (nee) Nielsen. He has eight living children. Cheryl Voortman and Debbie Peek, daughters from his first marriage. Linda and Andy share six children, Kim Sullivan (Mark), Cinderella Conway (Mike), Kathy Hughes, Virgil “Raymond” Hughes, Bonnie Deiter (Nick), Andy Joe “AJ” Hughes (Krysta). He is survived by 20 Grandchildren, and 29 great grandchildren. Surviving Siblings: Vernon Hughes, Thomas Hughes, Carol Gebbia, Geraldine Spencer and Phyliss Williams. He also left behind many nieces, nephews and in-law relations that loved him dearly and called him Uncle, Brother and friend. He was proceeded in death by his father, Virgil (Pop) Hughes, mother Dora Monday. Brothers: William (Bill) Hughes, Sisters: Ramona Hughes, Cinderella Hughes, and Virginia Hughes. Grandchildren: Casey Castro and Gavin Martin and great grandchild Quincy Jones. Private graveside services are scheduled for Wednesday, January 17, 2018 at 1:00 pm at Evergreen Cemetery in Yreka, California. Services will be performed by Peter Nielsen, brother-in-law.
