Barbara Jean Hanstein

Barbara Jean Hanstein was born on January 28, 1940 in Long Beach CA to William Shewan and Elizabeth Foster. She passed away peacefully on May 29, 2012. Barbara lived in Napa for many years and there she advised students in the Women’s Re-entry Program at Napa Valley College, served as President of the Classified Employee’s Association, and later as a Business Agent for SEIU, Local 614. In those roles Barbara provided leadership in transforming the employee/employer labor relations at the college from adversarial to collegial, a significant contribution to the college. Barbara moved to Lake Shastina in 1993 and worked at Siskiyou Training and Employment Program, Inc., as a Career Evaluation Coordinator, retiring from there in 2002. After retirement, Barbara was very active in her community, where she served on the Board of Directors of STEP and on the NoRTEC Workforce Investment Board and the NoRTEC Youth Council, and she also volunteered at the Hospice Heartisan Shop in Yreka. She was a member of P.E.O., a Philanthropic Educational Organization, and was passionate about their mission of promoting educational opportunities for women. She also belonged to the Quilters by the Lake, and the Red Hat Society. She was known as “Grandma Barbara” to Mrs. Miller’s 2nd grade class at Butteville School, where she helped 6 years of students design individual quilt blocks for a quilt she finished for them to be displayed at school representing their class. Barbara loved life. She enjoyed travel, cruises and camping. In addition to “her mountain”, Mt. Shasta, she was rejuvenated by the ocean. She especially loved the Sonoma Coast and Monterey Bay. Her laughter could fill a room, her friends an auditorium. Her puppies made her happy. She was tireless in pursuing her many interests. She was courageous in facing adversity and engaged in living enthusiastically for all the time she was given. Many who are left to cherish Barbara’s memory include her sister, Margaret DeVon of San Anselmo; her daughter, Dana Hanstein-Hanlen and husband Andy of Cypress CA; her son, Dale Hanstein of Colfax CA; and two grandchildren, Brenna and Sabrina, who were the loves of her life, as well as many other family and friends. A memorial service will be held on August 25, 2012 at 11:00 A.M. at St. Barnabas Episcopal Church, 701 Lassen Lane in Mt. Shasta, CA. Memorial Contributions can be made in her name to the Madrone Hospice House, 255 Collier Circle, Yreka, CA 96097.
