David Carl Franklin

David Franklin passed on November 5that 11:25 AM in Yreka with wife SuAnne and children, Jeffrey and Becca at his side. David was born in Medford, Oregon on March 26, 1936 to Laurence and Alice Franklin of Hilt, California. He is survived by his 3 siblings, Lillian, Delbert and Lucille. His family purchased a ranch in Plowman's Valley where he and his siblings were raised. After graduating from Etna High School in 1954, David attended Oregon Technical Institute for two years. Following school, he worked at Hjertager's Mill and drove log trucks outside of Callahan, California. He was drafted into the military in 1959. After leaving the military, he returned to the family ranch and returned to Hjertager's Mill in Callahan. He later worked for Boyd & Franson in Yreka as an auto mechanic. During that time he crossed paths with SuAnne Franklin, who worked at a local bank. David and Su were married November 2, 1963. Shortly after marriage they moved to their current residence. Son Jeffrey David was born May 25, 1966. Daughter Rebecca Su followed on May 22, 1969 (sharing her mother's birthday). David and Su were active in the Circle and Square dance group for many years. David was an avid biker for many years, taking time to bike in every state through which they traveled. He was also a great fan of Greenhorn Park and was one of several local citizens who constructed the water wheel (arrastra) at the Park. In retirement, David loved spending time in his woodworking shop on various projects for Yreka, family and friends. In the summers, his grandchildren, Mac, Trevor, Van and Sophia, were found assisting him in his shop with whatever project was at hand. Some of his more noticable work can be seen in the Welcome signs at the Southern and Northern exits off of I-5, in the Yreka sign at the Central exit, as well as installations throughout Greenhorn Park. David never went anywhere without pulling puncture vines on the sides of the road and was never without a tape measure and pocket wrench to tackle repairs whenever he found them. Because of the Covid pandemic, in lieu of a formal gathering, the family invites you to stroll through Greenhorn Park in David's memory, observing the arrastra, bench on the Ditch Trail, as well as the 75 routing signs that David and Mike Irvine carved and installed along the trails.
