Eleanor Mae David

Yreka resident Eleanor “Ellie” Mae David, 85, passed away on May 10, 2012 in Yreka. She was a past resident of Callahan and Fort Jones. Eleanor was born November 15, 1926 in East Holden, Maine to M. Albert and Crystal (Pierce) Phillips. She grew up on the family farm with her two sisters Dorothy and Hughene. While a young girl she lived through the Great Depression and graduated from Brewer High School. During World War II she volunteered for the Aircraft Warning Service as an airplane spotter. Following the war she attended the University of Maine, Orono, where she obtained her degree in Home Economics. She met Randall David while attending the University of Maine and they were married on December 19, 1953, after she worked a brief stint as a teacher in Machias, Maine. They moved out to Seneca, Oregon and then to California while supporting his career as a forest ranger. The couple enjoyed their 50th wedding anniversary in 2003. Eleanor lived in Siskiyou County for 54 years. She was a member of the Catholic Church and attended in both Yreka and Fort Jones. Eleanor was voracious reader and enjoyed gardening. In addition to her Home Economics degree, she earned a degree in Psychology at Southern Oregon State. She is preceded in death by her husband Randall in 2004, both of her parents, siblings, and her son Chris who died February 14, 2001. Eleanor is survived by her children; Albert and his wife Leticia; Craig, Dianna and her husband; Michael Swaim, James, Randy and his wife Noriko; and three grandchildren Katelynn, Maria-Luisa and Max. In addition, Eleanor is survived by many cousins, nieces and nephews and other relatives on the Atlantic coast. A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Friday, May 18, 2012 at 10:00 AM at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Fort Jones. The family invites friends and relatives to share refreshments and conversation at the Sacred Heart Parish Hall following internment in the Fort Jones Catholic Cemetery. The family wishes to extend their appreciation to Joy Timm for her selfless efforts in helping Ellie live her last few years as independently as possible.
