Elizabeth "Pat" Martin

Surrounded by her family, Elizabeth Patricia (Ley) Martin left this earth for her heavenly home on Aug. 20, 2014. She was born on June 14, 1934, in Yreka, California, to John C. Ley and Wilda Trivelpiece Ley. Flag Day was a fitting day for her birth, she being such a patriotic soul. She was raised in Etna and oftentimes recalled fond memories of her childhood there. She was a high school cheerleader and moved to Yreka as a sophomore, graduating from Yreka High School. It was there that she met Brice Cooper Martin, whom she married on Dec. 28, 1952, after he returned from the Korean conflict. She and Brice attended the University of California, Davis, where she studied animal husbandry. During her life, Pat was active in various organizations and causes. She was a Sunday school teacher at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church and choir director for the Little Shasta Church Choir for 20-plus years. She coordinated a vacation bible school at the family’s Table Rock Ranch and selflessly provided “Monday School,” an after-school Bible teaching class for many years. Each spring, she hosted third-grade school field trips to the ranch for generations of students, presenting historical and cultural aspects of the ranch. She was club leader for Table Rock 4-H Club for many years, was a Siskiyou County CattleWomen past president and CattleWoman of the Year. She was involved in many other organizations such as Daughters of the American Revolution, Concerned Women for America, Siskiyou County Republican Women, Siskiyou County Resource Advisory Council and served on the College of the Siskiyou’s Board of Directors. Most important to her was her service to the family and to the ranch. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother, and also cowhand, cook and bookkeeper. Pat never spoke an unkind word and always had a smile on her face. She put others’ needs before her own, and her joy was to spend time with her grandchildren and extended family. She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Brice; her mother, Wilda Ley (Mammy is age 100); her sister, Mary Lynn Crebbin; her children: Brice (Heidi) Martin, J.T. (Linda) Martin, Jess Martin, Rance Martin and Janna (Scott) Gliatto; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father, John Ley (Pappy); sister, Virginia White; and her grandson, Zac Martin. A celebration of life will be held at 2 p.m. this Saturday, Aug. 30, 2014, at the Grenada Community Berean Church, 512 Sixth St. in Grenada.
