Fred W. Kegg

Fred W. Kegg (Freddie) of Yreka passed away on March 3rd, 2013 at Fairchild Medical Center. Fred was born March 15th, 1942 at Siskiyou General Hospital to Ona and Mildred Kegg. Fred was the fourth generation of the first settlers in Little Shasta Valley who were farmers and ranchers. Fred grew up in the valley on the ranch with his brother Richard, his sister Elaine, numerous uncles, aunts and cousins. Working hard and going to school was a standard way for a country boy back then but even so he found time to for some good old fashion fun. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and swimming with his friends and family. Fred’s world changed in 1955 with the death of his grandpa Dow and the death of his dad Ona. Even though it was hard for them they were able to keep the ranch for a few more years before moving on. In 1960 Fred, known as “Freddie" to his friends, graduated from Yreka High School. In high school he made numerous friends and lettered in track. The summer after graduation, Fred met Leona M. Allen aka “Shorty” and began courting her. In 1961, Fred broke his neck when he dove into Orr Lake. However, the accident did not break Fred’s spirit, six weeks later he walked out of the hospital. In 1962, Fred and Leona were married. On May 31st, 1963 they welcomed their first child Lisa R. Kegg and on January 7th, 1968 had their second child, Duane M. Kegg. In the early 60’s, Fred, aka “Powder Keg”, started hauling logs, driving for several trucking businesses in Siskiyou County. In 1978 he purchased his first logging truck. Fred hauled logs until 1986, when his neck injury finally forced him to quit. However, he had a few drivers that kept hauling logs until 2003. Fred enjoyed hunting and fishing. When he was no longer able to do the things he enjoyed the most, he became an avid sports fan following the SF 49er’s, SF Giants and NASCAR. He also enjoyed going out to his son’s shop and hanging out with him. Fred is survived by daughter Lisa Kegg and her daughter Ashlee Owens; his son and daughter-in-law Duane & Debbie Kegg and their son Jordan Bauerle; his brother and sister-in-law Richard & Louise Kegg and their children Léo Washburn, Joanne McReynolds, Jeannie Johndreau and Scott Kegg; his sister Elaine’s daughter Danielle Miller and his four aunts, Thelma Mort, Phyllis Hankins, Louise Pitts and Edith Crutchfield as well as numerous cousins. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, March 15, 2013 at Girdner Funeral Chapel. A celebration of Fred’s life will follow at the Greenhorn Grange located on Ranch Lane, Yreka. All of his friends and family are invited to attend and celebrate his life. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Little Shasta Church or Little Shasta Cemetery.
