Jack Casper Stacher

John "Jack" Casper Stacher, 87, of Etna passed away on July 6, 2021. Jack was born March 24, 1934, in Springfield, Oregon, to Casper "Cap" and Ruth (Grinnell) Stacher. Jack always told his mom Ruth that he would never forgive her for being born in Oregon. He would tell her that the Hobson's and Stacher's have lived in Northern California since the 1860's. Cap, Ruth, Jack, and Brother Bill lived in Sawyers Bar, the place Cap was born and Cap was driving mail stage for Tucker and Parker to Etna. Ruth, Jack, and Bill shortly after moved back to Etna to be with Ruth's mother. On December 8, 1944, when Jack was 10 and Bill was 6, they were staying with grandparents as Cap and Ruth had gone to Sacramento for a family member's funeral. Playing outside, they noticed the dogs barking at something in the tree. It turned out to be the chicken-killing bob cat raiding the neighborhood. Jack told Bill to stay on the ground and up the tree with a stick went Jack. He got to the bob cat and hit it with the stick, knocking it to the ground where it was met by the dogs. The boys were not sure if they wanted the $1 bounty or to have the cat stuffed. A week later, a much larger bob cat was spotted in the tree and this time Jack and Bill got grandpa Pamp and Jack's .22 rifle and collected another bob cat. Both cats were tanned and placed on the wall. Jack attended Etna High School, where he met the love of his life, Nancy Kay Baird, Jack graduated in June of 1952. They were married on June 12, 1953. Nancy passed away on March 26, 2021at the age of 85 in the home Jack's grandfather built in 1934. Jack worked at several different saw mills and log cutting jobs after graduation until February 1954, when he went to work for Siskiyou Telephone. The Siskiyou Telephone became family to him and his family. He worked there for 46 years as Central Office and Installer Manager. He loved the work and people, especially Elinor Hendricks. She was invited to and attended many family dinners and holiday celebrations. Jack loved to hunt and fish with his family and close friends. Many a time were spent around camp fires telling of past good times and good friends. Jack loved to help the kids, all kids. Jack served 9 years as Etna Little League President. He worked during the Etna football games on the chain crew for over 20 years and received a lifetime pass and induction into the Etna High School Sports Hall of Fame for his contribution. Jack served his community as well with 15 years on the Etna City Council with most of the time spent as Mayor. Jack and Nancy maintained property that included the "Stacher's Pond" for which most all young kids of the town grew up fishing. Many children caught their first fish in Stacher's Pond. Jack is survived by three children and 10 grandchildren whose photos Jack and Nancy would place around the house so they could always see them: Duane (wife Kim, children Cody, Tony, Nicholas, Ally, Jessie). John (wife Jill, children Luke, Lacey). Mikeal (wife Kelly, AJ, Kyle, Ryan.), and numerous great grandchildren. A quote from Jack to me just prior to his passing: "Duane", he said "REMEBER THE GOOD TIMES AND NOT THE BAD" With that, WE LOVE YOU AND FAIRWELL MY FATHER!
