James Claude "Jim" Davis

James Claude Davis passed away at Madrone Hospice House, August 15, 2026, after a long illness. Jim was born April 2, 1948, in Los Angeles, California to Claude and Dorothy Prescott Davis. Jim was the eldest of four children, followed by his brother, Steve, and two sisters, Susan and Cathy. Jim graduated from Buchanan High School in Fresno and attended Fresno City College. He later transferred to University of California, Davis, to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in Wildlife Biology. While still in college, Jim began working summers for the US Forest Service in the Sierra National Forest as an engineering tech. He was transferred to the Klamath National Forest, where he worked for 35 years, until his retirement. During his career in the Klamath National Forest, Jim worked in engineering, was fire season manager at the Siskiyou County Airport tanker base, and ended his career as the Forest Road Manager. Jim met Patricia Hirning, establishing a 40 year family partnership with her and her daughters, Diana and Monica Hirning. He was a loving stepfather to the girls, sharing his love of the outdoors, teaching them to be kind and responsible people, and to appreciate good wine and food with family and friends. Jim was active in the Yreka Methodist Church, and later the Montague Community Church, serving for several years on the Pastor Parish Relations Committee. He loved playing baseball and volleyball in his younger years, but his favorite activity was back packing into the Sierras with his friends, the Miller brothers. Jim is survived by his partner, Patricia Hirning; stepdaughter, Diana Hirning Johnson, and her children Chase and Sidney Johnson; stepdaughter Monica Hirning, and her husband Jason Thomas; his sisters Susan Davis Morrow and Cathy Davis Richards, and her husband Doug; as well as several nieces and nephews. Jim is preceded in death by his parents, Claude and Dorothy Davis and brother, Steve Davis. A memorial service will be held 11:00 a.m., Saturday, August 29, 2026 at the Montague Community Church, 150 South 12th St, Montague, with a catered lunch and fellowship to follow.
