John David Rowan

John D. Rowan passed from this life on January 11, 2015 surrounded by family. He was born January 12, 1922 to Bert and Georgia Rowan in Potrero, California. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Joan M. Rowan; daughters Linda Taylor ( Ron), Georgia Molter, Gail Jones, Ellen Rowan; sons Richard Rowan (Terry) and James Rowan (partner, Tammy Jones); his sister Patricia Pfitzmeir and brother Chris Rowan; and his brother in law J. Harvey Welton. Family was very important to John and he took such pride in his grandchildren; Ron Taylor Jr. (Michele), Shawn Taylor (Daniela), Todd Taylor (Angela) , Joan Hoy (partner John Cook), Keira Molter, David Molter(Laura), Nicholas Molter, Andy Rowan (Krislyn), Jeffrey Rowan, Jamie Adkins. He and Joan were blessed with great grandchildren Arron Hoy, Brian Hoy, Tye Taylor, Tessa Taylor, Leona Taylor, Trevor Taylor, William Taylor, and Dakota Taylor. It seemed that John has always had a job, something useful to do and to be a part of. Starting from his youngest days on the family ranch, to serving his country during World War II in Europe, then 37 years working for the Los Angeles DWP and teaching electrical code at Pasadena College. When he retired in 1979, he and Joan decided to join some of the family in Yreka. They always loved the north country, trees, blue skies and four seasons. After settling in and getting acquainted with the community, they found another passion, and so began their business “Patchworks Yarns and Gifts”. Together John and Joan used their talents to bring beauty, service and a place to gather in the community. All of John's experience led to yet another opportunity to be useful and to make a difference as he spent the past 20 years as a SCORE counselor. He loved meeting new people and working with them to figure out the viability and practicality of starting or expanding a small business. His last days were spent with Joan at Madrone Hospice House. He had grown to know and love the staff as he visited his beloved wife. It made sense to him that as he grew weaker and less able to do routine tasks that he would join her. All of the Rowan family are indebted to all the staff who serve with love and compassion. John was lovingly cared for up to the last minute of his life. It’s hard to find words to express our thanks. In lieu of flowers, a donation to Madrone Hospice would be appreciated. Their address is 255 Collier Circle, Yreka, Ca. 96097 There will be a memorial service and reception for John on February 14, 2015, 11:00 a.m. at the Yreka Community Center, 810 North Oregon Street, Yreka, Ca.
