Julie Marie Duncan

Julie Marie Duncan passed away at her home in Greenview with her family present on June 18, 2023. She was 75 years old. Julie was born in Berkeley on January 18, 1948 to Earl and Joy Armantrout. She was the third of four siblings: Sharon, Steve, Julie and Mark. She grew up in Richmond until moving to Fort Jones in the 8th grade. In high school, she met Don Duncan, fell in love, and got married right after high school, on September 3, 1966. The couple lived in Chico before setting up life in Scott Valley. They had two daughters, Jennifer and Amy. Family was Julie's top priority as a loving and teaching mother and grandmother. Julie worked for 30 years for the school system, at both Etna High and Scott Valley Junior High Schools. She was the first secretary at Scott Valley Junior High for many years. She served as the California School Employees Association (CSEA) local President and Regional Representative for most of those 30 years. Following her retirement, Julie continued to keep active in the community and expanded her adventures. She became a School Board member, President of the Scott Valley Hospital Guild, member of the Friends of the Library and Red Hat Society, President of the Scott Valley Lioness Club, and participated in many other community events. She enjoyed gardening and maintained a beautiful yard throughout the year. She was the founder and organizer of The Over the Hill Hiking Group, and enjoyed hiking, finding new trails for the group to travel, and being in nature. She liked camping, sewing, bird watching and playing cards or Rummikub with friends and family. Julie and Don traveled to over 40 locations, not including yearly trips to see family and grandkids (in New Mexico, Eureka, Hood River, Boise, Santa Barbara and more.) Many of their travels were in the United States and Canada, including throughout the western states (Big Sur, Gold Beach, Crater Lake, the King Tut exhibit in Seattle, Yosemite, Trinidad, Diamond Lake, Silver Falls, Oregon Caves and Coast, La Honda and California Coast, wine tasting trips in Southern Oregon, a Shriner's football game at Stanford, and several family reunions); the Southwest (Grand Canyon, Death Valley and Bryce Canyon); New York City; New Orleans; Northeast to see the fall colors; Victoria, Canada; cruises to Alaska and up the Mississippi River; a tour around the U.S. in 1976 and the 1986 World's Fair in Vancouver, Canada. Other trips took them internationally to Malaysia, Ireland and Scotland, Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, Northern Europe, England and Scotland, as well as cruises to the Caribbean, Mediterranean, on the Rhine and Danube Rivers, and New Zealand/Australia. One of Julie and Don's favorite visits was to Santorini, Greece. Julie is survived by her loving husband of 57 years, Don; daughter Jennifer and son-in-law Steve Meyer; daughter Amy Duncan and son-in-law Eric Leahy; sister Sharon McCurdy; brothers Steve and Mark Armantrout; grandchildren Nick Meyer, Madison Meyer, Quinn Leahy and Kenya Leahy; and many other friends and family that she kept in contact with over the years. Her bright light, laughter and joyful smile have touched many lives and she will be dearly missed. There will be an open house and socializing time in honor of Julie's life on Saturday, August 5, 2023 from 1:00 to 3:00 PM at Julie and Don's home at 1919 Meyers Road, Greenview, CA 96037.
