Margaret Ida Still

Margaret Ida Still passed away peacefully on Monday, September 23, 2013 during a stay at the Madrone Hospice House. She was 90 years old. She had been suffering from dementia for many years and had received loving care from her oldest daughter, Dianne, for those many years. Margaret was born on January 22, 1923 in Wilcox, Nebraska to Harry Harper Jordan and Ingeborg Cecile Jorgensen Jordan. She was the third of five children and the youngest daughter. She moved to Long Beach with her family after she graduated from high school. After moving to California, she met her husband, Lester Ray Still, while walking past a friend’s house. Les was immediately stricken with her beauty and had to meet her. They eloped to Las Vegas in 1942. They lived in Compton, Tehachapi, and Bakersfield before moving to Siskiyou County in approximately 1948. They first lived in Tennant and then Weed, ending in Big Springs. Margaret loved Siskiyou County for its abundant natural beauty, particularly Mt Shasta. Margaret had 5 children, 4 girls and 1 boy. She loved to garden, sew, crochet, embroidery, listen to classical music and read. She was also an excellent cook who could make anything she made seem to be the best meal in the world. Flowers were a special love of hers. She definitely had a green thumb. She especially loved birds and would always feed them. They loved to come to her home because they always knew they would get a meal. Animals were also a love of hers and they loved her just as much. If anyone came to her home and was hungry, she would feed them both, stranger on the road and friend. Margaret was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, Lester Ray Still, her parents, Harry and Ingeborg Jordan, her sisters Phyllis and Dorothy and her brothers David and Ross. She is survived by her 5 children, Dianne (Richard) Salyer of Big Springs, Daniel (Cindy) Still of Oakland, Oregon, Mary Shackelford of Yreka, Jo Ann (Robert) Lord of Kentucky and Sharon Still of Yreka and by sister-in-law Anna (George) Wright of Fillmore, CA. She is also survived by 15 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandson. Margaret will surely be missed by all who knew her and especially by her family. She is now free to be with those who have passed before her and she missed so much. A family service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to the Madrone Hospice House who made Mom’s last days on earth peaceful and comfortable (Madrone Hospice, 255 Collier Circle, Yreka, CA 96097). Girdner Funeral Chapel is assisting the family.
