Ormond "Ed" Edward Quigley

Longtime Etna resident Ed Quigley passed away on September 2, 2020 at his home surrounded by his family. He was 95 years old. Ed was born on June 2, 1925 in Etna to Charles and Alma (Mann) Quigley. He was the youngest child that consisted of six brothers and one sister. Ed grew up in Etna with his siblings. He started driving a logging truck when he was 15 in 1940, with the understanding from law enforcement that he only drove from the landing to the mill, which consisted of driving up and down Whiskey Butte to Miller’s Mill in Etna. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. He enlisted in the Navy at the age of 17 and went to Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. He was placed on the USS Shipley Bay aircraft carrier as an Electronic Technician’s Mate, Third Class. Specifically, his duty was a radio technician, where he had to learn Morse Code. His ship traveled from New Zealand to the Aleutian Islands where he was called to fight in World War II. He earned some medals, but nobody ever would know as Ed was a very humble man. After the war Ed came home and returned to logging until 1970. In the meantime, he met the love of his life, Harriett Emma Roff, and they were married on July 18, 1947. They had two children, Ron and Kathy. Ed worked at Etna High School for a short time and then on to Cal-Trans until his retirement in 1988. During retirement, he enjoyed traveling and campground hosting in the Pacific Northwest. He was a member of the I.O.O.F. for 69 years. He was also a member of the American Legion, Perry Harris Post #260. He loved to hunt, fish and ride horses in the Russian Wilderness and surrounding areas. Ed was very reserved around the public, but was talked into riding in the Veteran’s Parade one year as the Grand Marshal. He was very proud of his country and taught his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren the importance of the American Flag. Family meant everything to him. He was very good at problem solving and always liked to be prepared. Ed “Poppa” will be greatly missed. He is survived by his wife of 73 years, Harriett; his children Ron (Sandy) Quigley and Kathy (Jerry) Durett, all of Scott Valley; six grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents and brothers, Harvey, Bill, Joe, Frank, Bob and Clifford Quigley, and his sister Alma Johnston. Graveside services will be held on Saturday, September 12, 2020 at 11:00 AM at the Etna Cemetery. Donations can be made to the organization of your choice in memory of Ed.
