Sarah H. Rice

Sarah H. Rice Sarah Rice passed away on June 25, 2010 with her daughter Lynette Hansen and her granddaughter Sarah Killingsworth at her side. She was born to Mary and John Brogan on May 10, 1922 in Shreveport, La. She later moved to Ventura, Calif. and then to Ojai, Calif. She attended Nordhoff High School, where she sang in the choir. Throughout her life she enjoyed arts and crafts, dogs, crossword puzzles, knitting, shopping, painting and special times with her children and family. She is survived by her daughter Lynette Hansen; her son John Le Valley of the Philippines; and her stepdaughter Jan Brockmann of Winchester, Ore. She is also survived by her sister Sally Magill of Ojai; her brother Bob Brogan of Carson City, Nev.; her grandchildren, Norlyn Peters, Mike Stufflebeam, Donna Reusze, Sarah Killingsworth, Donald Banhart Jr., David LeValley and Kim LeValley; 14 great-grandchildren; and 13 great-great-grandchildren. In death, she was preceded by her first husband Allen LeValley, her second husband James Rice, her sister Marjory, her brother Jim Brogan and her precious grandson Johnny LeValley. She loved her family dearly and loved all animals. She could never turn down a dog that needed a home. She also loved her orange Camaro, her beloved poodles and “Walker Texas Ranger” reruns. She was a fabulous dancer and had been chosen from hundreds to be a model in the 1940s. She was a wonderful mother and a very special person who was loved by many. Her last year of life was spent at Mt. View Manor in Yreka, where she was given care and love by the staff. Our sweet mother, grandmother, sister and aunt to many will be forever missed. She will never be forgotten by all of us who knew and loved her. Love to you my dear sweet mother, from your forever loving daughter Lynette. From her granddaughter Sarah: “I will never forget my darling grandmother. I will miss the long conversation about her youth and her days as the hot cocktail waitress at the Hub in Ojai, Calif., where her earrings, shoes and dress all had to match. I could tell my grandmother anything, in total confidence. We shared the love of animals, jewelry and oriental art. Also, I will never forget her grand Easter egg hunts and the best prizes around! Also, her bigger-than-ever Christmas trees and how she loved her nails always kept perfect. I always said, ‘Now those are the hands of a woman who does nothing!’ And she would laugh, especially when she would say ‘She’s a Sarah!’ I will never forget how she loved me and how I love her. Goodbye my darling, goodbye. I will see you in Heaven! Love, your namesake, Sarah.” A celebration of life will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 3, 2010 at her granddaughter Donna’s home at 501 S. Gold St. in Yreka. The family requests in lieu of flowers to please donate to Madrone Hospice and Rescue Ranch.
