William "Bill" Erskine Duncan III

William “Bill” Erskine Duncan passed away quietly at his home on August 24, 2017 surrounded by his family. Our father was admired and loved greatly by all of his children and grandchildren and will be greatly missed, but never forgotten. He was an avid outdoorsman, and his love for fishing and hunting was his passion. He moved from El Dorado County to Yreka in 1972 to take up the position of Chief of Police until his retirement in 1985. He was in law enforcement for over two decades. He was considered an expert marksman and a two time member of the elite Governor’s Top Twenty shooters in the state of California, his passion for shooting continued until just weeks prior to his death. He also participated in archery in the World Police Olympic Games. Dad took up Taxidermy after retiring in 1985 when he moved to Cedarville, California where he lived for about 4 years before moving to Afton, Wyoming. His home in Afton was situated at the edge of the Bridger-Teton National Forest. It was heaven for him to jump on his 4-wheeler and head into the wilderness. He returned to Cedarville several years later to build a home on his property which bordered the Warner National Forest. His favorite spot was Steamboat Rock. Again, he had his own piece of heaven, where he could hop on his 4-wheeler and head into the wilderness. Dad moved back to Yreka in 2012 for health reasons, fortunately for Dad, his son Brett had purchased the family home where Dad resided when he was the Chief of Police of Yreka. He lived with his son, Brett and daughter-in-law, Beth until his passing. Dad had many passions in life, including taking his dog, Khan, for his daily runs behind the house and his other daily ritual of going to Don’s Sporting Goods and rolling dice for the grand prize of a cup of coffee and a couple of tootsie rolls. After that, it was out to Dodge Range making sure he could still hit the center of a target. A favorite saying of our Dad was “As long as your children outlive you, you’ve lived a good life”. Dad is survived by his loving children: Janice Smith of San Diego, Pam Riggins of Yreka, Sue Meyer of Placerville, Mark Duncan & Brett Duncan of Yreka and his numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Unfortunately, his daughter Alicia Hale preceded him in death. Graveside services will be held at the Evergreen Cemetery on Wednesday August 30th at 10:00 a.m. All that knew our father are welcome to attend.
