David George Carter

On Thursday, June 9, 2011, after a six-year battle with lymphoma, David George Carter, of Yreka, CA, peacefully slipped away at his home, with loving family members at his bedside. Dave was born in Ashland, Oregon on March 24, 1937 to Marion and Janey Carter. Dave spent most of his childhood and his teenage years in Ashland. At Ashland High School, Dave lettered in baseball and basketball, and played the trumpet in the Ashland City Band. He enjoyed cruising and drag racing his array of cars as a member of the car club in Ashland, The Road Knights. Dave served in the United States Marine Corps. In 1961, he married Lorna Kay Tobiasson, of Ashland. For five years, they lived in Sacramento and the Bay area. In 1966, Peters Truck Lines hired David to move to Yreka and work in the company’s Transportation Department there. Dave worked with this company for 25 years, auditing freight bills and serving as Office Manager. In Yreka, David served for 10 years on the City Planning Commission. He also served actively in the Junior Chamber of Commerce, Elks Club, and Rotary Club. David and Lorna have three children: Angela Carter, Yreka, California; Steven Carter, who passed away in 2007; and Lisa (Josh) Carter, of Talent, Oregon. Grandchildren include Danielle, Steven, Jacob, Sarah, Nathan, Gracie, Lainie, David, and Emily. Great-grandchildren include Olivia, Lily, and Mia. David has one brother, Frank (Jo) Carter, of Medford, Oregon. David was an avid race-car fan. He even made a bicycle-car, which he entered in a city contest and won first prize for his race. For 25 years, Dave hosted Tuesday-night card games. He was a skilled woodworker. For example, he carved a chess set, built a Golden Gate bridge, built engraved cradles for the grandchildren, made a grandfather clock that still works perfectly, and built an elegant bookshelf for the family. David’s most precious times were spent with his family. They went camping, made annual family treks for a Christmas tree, and cut and split the winter’s supply of firewood. Family members treasure evenings spent viewing favorite movies. Not to be forgotten are his evenings with his sweet-and-tender companion, Lorna, as the two walked their dogs Buck, Brandy, and Sophie around Greenhorn. His presence will be greatly missed. Memorial services will be at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 16 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Miner Street in Yreka, California.
