Domenic Angelo Favero

Domenic Angelo Favero passed away very peacefully at home on Monday, October 3, 2011. Although he was 95, everyone thought he was much younger, and he loved seeing their surprise! Until recently he was well known for his daily routine of walks around the neighborhood and coffee at Don’s. He thoroughly enjoyed visiting and catching up on the news about town. This was the highlight of his day. Domenic was born on July 14, 1916, in Hilt, CA, to Angelo and Angela Favero from Possagno, Italy. His older brother, the late John Favero and his younger sister, Zoe Rossetto, grew up on the Italian side of Hilt. Dom thought it was a “wonderful experience for kids; it was so open you could choose something to do anytime”. Attending Yreka High School, where he graduated in 1934, was quite a change from his experience in the small town of Hilt. With six football players on the team living in Hilt, when the coach wanted to practice late, he loaned them his brand new Model A roadster so they could participate and return to Hilt, because the school bus didn’t run that late! Eventually he and his brother fixed up a Model T, and he told great stories about their antics in that car. In his high school woodshop class, he made a floor lamp for his mother that is still in use today. After turning the spindle on the lathe and splitting and routing it to install the electric cord, matching the grain to hide the joint was impossible. He told Mr. Morell, the shop teacher, “I can’t get the grain to match on the joint!” Mr. Morell took him aside and said, “I never want to hear you say the word can’t again. Now, get to work and make that joint perfect!” Those were words he lived by throughout his life. After working at the box factory in Hilt, he was hired by Erickson & James in Yreka, beginning his automotive career. He eventually owned the Flying A and Phillips 66 Service Station with his brother-in-law Scotty Cameron. He married Edna Trivelpiece in 1938, and they enjoyed forty years together. His immediate family includes his eldest son Dom Jr. and daughter-in-law Joan Favero, his daughter Adrienne (Sis) Cowling, his youngest son Brian and daughter-in-law Carol Cupp Favero, his four grandchildren John and Kathleen Cowling, Sebastian and Cattarina Favero, and his four great-grandchildren, Nate and Riley Miller, and Andrew and Emma Cowling. Dom lived in the same home for sixty-seven years with numerous changes occurring. In 1957, they hosted Elfriede Würm from Munich, Germany, under the American Field Service Exchange Student program who, to this day, remains part of the family. He enjoyed outdoor adventures with many family members, but his wildest stories came from hunting and fishing trips with brother-in-law John Ley, aka “George.” Although Dom was in State Guard (now National Guard) he chose to relinquish his deferment and assume active duty service in the Army in 1944 where he served mainly in Khorramshahr and Andimeshk, Iran. During his two year tour of duty, his automotive technical skills were recognized by many Army officials, and although advancement and career opportunities were offered, he chose to return to home and hearth. He was a member of the American Legion, Elks Club, Boy Scouts of America Scoutmasters, Red Scarf Society for the Performing Arts, as well as serving numerous terms on the YHS Board of Directors and the Evergreen Cemetery Board of Directors. More recently he was a member of the Sis-Q-A’s, driving his yellow ’30 Model A Cabriolet in the local parades. Dom married Peggy Kernohan in 1986, and her children Ethel and Cliff and granddaughter Alyson were welcomed into the family. They enjoyed golfing, cross country skiing, mushrooming, and traveling to visit family both in Italy and in the US. They were married for almost twenty years. His independence in later years was an inspiration for all. A daily glass of red wine, an unending sense of humor, constant availability, and generosity to all those who asked, seemed to have been the elixir for his longevity. A Graveside memorial at Evergreen Cemetery will be held at 2 PM on Saturday, Oct. 15th. Fellowship and remembrances will follow at the Greenhorn Grange Hall in Yreka.
