Duane Scott Glendenning

Third generation Scott Valley Native Duane Scott Glendenning, passed away on Saturday, May 14, 2016 at the Madrone Hospice House in Yreka. Duane leaves behind his beloved wife of 67 years, Evelyn (Leake). Duane and Evelyn were married August 21st, 1948. He also leaves behind his two children; Terry Glendenning and Sherry Glendenning. Duane was born March 28, 1924 at Siskiyou County Hospital in Yreka to Kelsie Baldwin and Violet (Linden) Glendenning. Duane was the oldest of three children. Duane attended school in Greenview, Ca, graduating from Ft. Jones High School in 1942. Duane loved sports both as a competitor and later as a coach. Duane participated in many sports in High School such as Football, Basketball and Baseball. He is in the Scott Valley Athletic Hall of Fame. In 1958 Duane coached Little League and Babe Ruth Baseball. Duane played Greenview Town Team Baseball and Ft. Jones Town Team Baseball (which became the Scott Valley Stars in 1948). Duane helped build the original Walker field in Ft. Jones in 1949. Duane joined the Navy in the spring of 1943, Boot Camp was in Farraget, Idaho. After boot camp he reported to Bremerton, Washington and was assigned to the USS Guadalcanal Carrier with 4 destroyers. They sank 4 German submarines. They captured a German submarine (the U 505), taking prisoners and they salvaged all of the records and codes which hastened the end of war. They received the Presidential Unit Citation for the Task Force. Duane ran the Whale Boat to hook up the tow lines. They towed the U 505 submarine to Bermuda and left it there. The carrier USS Guadalcanal was sent to Norfolk, Virginia. Duane was then sent to Fleet City in San Francisco, Ca and was assigned to a tug boat and was in charge of it until the end of the war with Japan. Duane was discharged in May 1946. The Submarine U 505 is in The Smithsonian in Chicago, Illinois. Duane drove logging and lumber trucks for many years. There wasn’t a backroad or logging road in the North State that Duane hadn’t been on. He was a truck driver for most of his adult life, keeping his commercial license until he was eighty years old. He also worked on the family ranch in Greenview until it was sold in 1976. Duane enjoyed the outdoors, taking the family on various hunting, fishing or camping excursions throughout Siskiyou County, passing that tradition on to his children. Duane was a member of Masonic Lodge No. 91, Ft. Jones for approximately fifty years. He was preceded in death by his parents, Kelsie and Violet and his sister Beverly and his brother Donn. Along with his wife and two children, Duane is survived by his grandson Steve Jessee and his wife Margo, great grandchildren Emilynn and Walker, and special grandchildren Teal and Colby Rimmer. Duane is also survived by many nieces and nephews including Kelsie (Jaye) White; Alan (Debbie) White; Russell (Lauren) White; and Jon Scott Leake. Duane is also survived by special friends the Dick Berry Family, Dan and Pam Rimmer Family and Bill and Shellee Mitan and Family. The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation to all of Duane’s caregivers Debbie and Crystal, as well as Madrone Hospice and Fairchild Medical Center. Per Duane’s wishes there will be no services held. Memorial contributions may be made to Madrone Hospice, 255 Collier Circle, Yreka, CA 96097 or to a charity of one’s choice.
