Elizabeth "Liz" Stewart

Elizabeth Susan Stewart, known affectionately to many as Liz or Aunt Beth, passed away on June 10, 2025. Liz was born on February 27, 1952 in San Juan Capistrano to Susie (Foussat) and Malcom Stewart, the youngest of four children. The family relocated their ranch in the 1960's, loading everything on the train, destined for the old Ager Stage Stop, where they raised cattle and hay. Liz attended Willow Creek Elementary and Yreka High School. She studied at Southern Oregon University and then College of the Siskiyous in Weed. When her mother became ill, they moved to a smaller place in Grenada. Liz went to work right after college and served the community in the Fiscal Department of Siskiyou County Human Services for 43 years, retiring in 2017. Her greatest joy was her family and friends. She was fiercely loyal, protective, and generous. You were always glad when you were on the receiving side of her compassion. She was also a living history book: she could tell you just about everything about every family and geographical area of Siskiyou County. Her love of community was her passion. Liz was very proud of her native heritage as a member of the San Luis Rey Mission band of Luiseno Indians. She had the pleasure of traveling to see her brother, David, and celebrate his participation in the Pow Wow at the Mission in Oceanside. It was a majestic and beautiful celebration at which she was presented a ceremonial shawl, on which Liz will be resting. Liz was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Mary Alice (Rodney) Blackwell. She is survived by her brother, David Stewart of San Diego, and sister, Ruth Ann Simpson of Yreka; loving nieces Tracy (Jim) O'Brion, Sara Hayden, Tessa Simpson, and Alice "A.J." (Glenn) Rex and her beloved great nieces and nephew: Troy, Sadie, Isabella and Makaley Bozarth, Jenna (Patrick) Evans, Oak and Ash Hayden. Also surviving her are aunts, uncles, and cousins - countless cousins - who she loved so deeply. A celebration of life for Liz will be held on Friday, August 29, 2025 at 10:30 a.m. at Girdner Funeral Chapel in Yreka. The service will be directed by Debbie Wetzel from Grenada Berean Church. Following the service, everyone is invited to a luncheon at the Yreka Elks Lodge, catered by Jessica Shaw and Fire Monkeys Catering. Please feel free to bring pictures and stories to share!
