Eugenia "Gene" Partlow

"Gene" was born on March 28, 1929 in Norwalk. She lost her parents when she was eight months old and for the first six years of her life she was raised by her paternal grandmother and grandfather. After the death of her grandfather, her uncle Bob assumed responsibility for her. Upon her uncle’s marriage in 1939 the family moved several times. Finally in 1942 they moved to El Segundo where Gene attended junior and senior high school. While in high school, she went to a Halloween party and met 20 year old Jack Partlow, just back from serving with the Marines in the Pacific Area during World War II. They were married on December 31, 1948, six months after Gene graduated from high school. In 1951 their son, Robert Glen, was born and in 1953 their family was complete with the birth of their daughter, Andrea Gene. Gene was active as a den mother for Cub Scouts, a Brownie and Girl Scout leader, in P.T.A. and as a room mother. Even though Jack had 18 years on the police department, after the Los Angeles riots of 1965 they felt there must be a better place to raise their children. Following an extended search they moved to Scott Valley in November, 1965. Jack was hired by the Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office, so they moved again, this time to Yreka. Gene was soon involved once more with her children’s school activities. Gene started working part time for the Sheriff’s Office in 1966 and then full time in 1968. She wore many hats in her job, out in the field when they had a case involving women or children, helping in jail when needed there and processing all warrants and arranging for extradition. She also dispatched and handled the telephones at the front desk and performed many other duties when called upon. She served as secretary for the County Peace Officer’s Association for seven years and was elected as the first woman president of that organization. She was a member of Stella Chapter 39, Order of the Eastern Star, and served as Worthy Matron many times as well as being Deputy Grand Matron in 1989. She and Jack retired in 1981 and for many years traveled all over the U.S., Canada and Mexico in their motor home. Her favorite travels were through the Civil War areas and visiting historic sites there. She passed away quietly at her home with her son and daughter-in-law by her side. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Andrea Gene Partlow-Simpson, and her husband, Jack. She is survived by a son, Bob, and daughter-in-law Liz of Arbuckle; four grandchildren, Jack and Nicole Simpson and Erik and Barbra Partlow. She also has two step granddaughters and three step great grandchildren of Woodland. Graveside services will be held on Tuesday, April 15, 2014 at 2:00 PM at Evergreen Cemetery in Yreka.
