George Manuel Rose

George Manuel Rose, loving husband, father, grandfather and friend, passed away peacefully at home on October 13, 2018, surrounded by family. He entered into the Kingdom of Heaven after succumbing to his lengthy battle with COPD. George was born on November 19, 1937 in Concord, CA to William & Helen Adele Rose. Growing up on his family ranch in Clayton Valley, he helped raise cattle, hay, grain, and tended the almond orchards. He was active in 4-H where he had a beef project and learned the fundamentals of the cattle industry by breeding and developing his own herd of Registered Herefords. George graduated from Clayton Valley Elementary School and Mt Diablo High School. He then completed the Two-Year Curriculum in Agriculture at the University of California, College of Agriculture at Davis. After college, a job opportunity brought George to Scott Valley, where he lived and worked on the Glenn & Betty Barnes Ranch. He decided to make Scott Valley his home and bought a ranch in Oro Fino, raising cattle and hay. Some of the best times of his life were spent running cattle in the Marble Mountains with family and other local ranchers. He often recalled the many adventures and good times spent camping and fishing with family and friends in the mountains, as well as the spectacular beauty of the areas they packed into. After selling the ranch, George moved to Fort Jones, bought into a farm supply store, started a livestock equipment manufacturing business, and later managed several ranches across Scott Valley. George went on to drive truck for various long haul companies, particularly Peters and ABF, and enjoyed the camaraderie of his fellow truckers and the benefits of being a Teamster. In retirement, George volunteered his time with the Sacred Heart Parish, St Vincent de Paul, and Scott Valley Loaves and Fishes. He also remained active in farming in retirement, baling and raking hay for local ranches in the summer and took pleasure in interacting with his co-workers and being part of a team. George had a number of interests. While his children were young, he obtained his pilot’s license and flew small planes for business and pleasure. He enjoyed outings on his boat, with many summer trips to Shasta Lake for water skiing and houseboating, as well as deep sea fishing and crabbing off the coast of Northern California and Oregon. He was a hard worker, a gardener who was famous for his canned hot peppers, and he loved to tell stories about his trucking and life adventures. He was very proud of all his children and grandchildren, their accomplishments in life, and the people they had grown into. George was always there to help his friends and family and will be remembered for his quick wit and sense of humor. George was preceded in death by his father William, his mother Helen Adele and his brother Richard. He is survived by his wife Julie; his daughter Patti and her husband Dave; his son Bill and his wife Paula; his stepdaughter Bridgette and her husband Nick; his stepson Jarrod and his wife Julie; his six grandchildren Billy, Joey, Katie, Zack, Dylan, and Ashley; and his great grandson Curtis. A Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, November 9, 2018 at 1:00pm at the Sacred Heart Parish in Fort Jones, CA followed by a graveside service at the Fort Jones Catholic Cemetery with a social gathering at the Sacred Heart Parish Hall afterwards.
