Viola Louise van Over

Viola Louise (Jacobs) van Over passed away on Nov. 30, 2011 at Madrone Hospice in Yreka. Viola, or “Vi” as she was affectionately known among her friends and family, was born on Feb. 13, 1923 in Elkhart, Ind., the second child of Margarite and Lloyd Jacobs. Viola had six brothers and one sister. At a young age she moved to the small town of Cutler, Ind., where she completed grammar school. Her high school days were spent in Cowan, Ind., where she graduated from high school in 1940. After graduating from high school, she moved to Muncie, Ind., where she was employed in a local jewelry store. In late 1944, she and three of her girl friends moved to Los Angeles, Calif. to work in the “war industries.” In March of 1945, she met her husband Wilbur, better known as “Van,” who was in the U.S. Navy at the time. In May of 1945, Wilbur’s ship went back to the Pacific War Zone, and they did not meet again until October of 1945. They were married on Nov. 25, 1945 at the Hollywood Beverly Christian Church in Hollywood, Calif. She and her husband lived in Modesto, Calif. after their marriage, and their daughter Judy was born there. From there they moved to Jackson, Amador County, Calif. in 1957, where Van was employed as the county welfare director. In March of 1959 they moved to Yreka, where Van was employed as the Siskiyou County welfare director. Vi was employed at the Siskiyou County Probation Department for a number of years and also at the Siskiyou County Hospital, until her retirement in November of 1980. Vi loved to go trout fishing in her younger days and was an avid camper. She was never happier than when they were traveling with their travel trailer on the highways and byways. She was a member of Stella Chapter No. 39, Order of the Eastern Star. Vi was preceded in death by five brothers and one sister. She leaves one brother Oscar Jacobs, who resides in Las Vegas, Nev. She also leaves behind her husband Wilbur; her daughter Judy Elliott; her son-in-law John Elliott; her granddaughter Dawn Hammond and her husband Robert; a second granddaughter Bethany Elliott; and three grandsons Timothy Elliott of Yreka, Christian Elliott of Santa Ana and Jacob Elliott, who is in the U.S. Army in Kuwait. In addition, she leaves three great-grandchildren, Micah and Jenna Hammond of Santa Ana and Skylar Elliott of Yreka. She also leaves a host of nieces and nephews in Indiana. She will be missed by her many friends and relatives. After cremation, interment will be in the family plot in the Pioneer Cemetery in Modesto. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Dec. 9, 2012 at the Yreka United Methodist Church.
