Vivian L. Crader

The gates of Heaven opened wide as the angels came and transported our beloved one to her eternal home. Vivian L. Crader was born on October 10, 1923 to John and Ader Brumley in Sallisaw, Oklahoma. She grew up with six of her eight siblings (two children died in infancy). She was the last living member of her family of origin. Vivian grew up with her family following the harvest. They picked cotton and other crops in Oklahoma, Texas and Arizona. When she was 14 years old, Vivian met the man of her dreams. Three years later, she married Franklin P. Crader in Loveland, Texas. Soon the couple and their infant daughter moved to Richmond, California to work in the shipyards. In 1945, the family moved to Fort Jones to work for the U.S. Forest Service. Both of them believed that Scott Valley was the most beautiful place on earth. In 1953, the family moved to Gasquet for a position with the forest service. In 1954 Vivian, with Frank’s blessing, moved to Arcata and enrolled at Humboldt State. Frank joined the family, and they returned to Scott Valley as soon as possible. Vivian’s teaching career began at the one room, eight grade, Meamber School outside of Fort Jones. When the Meamber School closed, she taught at Fort Jones Elementary School. In 1962, Vivian, with Frank’s full support, went to Chico. She taught school in the daytime and earned her Master’s Degree at night. She returned home and continued to teach. She taught reading throughout Siskiyou County. In 1971, she went to work as an educational curriculum consultant for the Department of Education in Siskiyou County. She visited many small schools, taught kids to square dance, did art projects with the students and assisted the teachers with whatever she could. She loved her career and gave selflessly to the children of Siskiyou County. She will always be remembered for the baked goods she took to the office on a regular basis! Vivian spent her life in service to other people. She served as Sunday School superintendent, and Sunday School teacher, Good News Club teacher and youth group leader. She served as a board member of church and Sunday School for many years. She also participated on a mission trip to Russia. She supported many missions and Christian organizations. Vivian is survived by her children, Sandra Trost (Ted), Mary Susan Winters and Sharon Saunders; grandchildren Heide Enos (John), Heather Davis, Heath Havlick (Tom), Sean Davis (Kim), Jeri Sue Barnett (Rick) and Charity Palmer (Stephen); great grandchildren Ashley and Alyson Enos, McQuade King (Tara), Morgan King, Wren Saunders-Smith, Garrison and Lara Palmer; great great grandchildren Tye and Olive Bristow and Kynzlee Trevino. She is also survived by her nephews, John and David Brumley and niece Wanda Hitt; Vivian helped raise them after their parents were tragically killed in a car accident. She loved them as her own. Vivian was preceded in death by her husband of nearly 70 years, Franklin Crader, in 2010; her son, Franklin Crader III; and two grandsons, Jeff and Danny Grossen. The family would like to thank her live-in caretakers, Geoff and Heather Davis and Robert Martony. A special thanks to Madrone Hospice for their loving care and support. Memorial contributions may be made to Madrone Hospice, 255 Collier Circle, Yreka, CA 96097. Funeral services will be held on Friday, August 4, 2017 at 11:00 AM at Girdner Funeral Chapel in Yreka. Interment will follow at Evergreen Cemetery.
