William "Bill" Overman

Longtime Yreka resident, William “Bill” Overman, died on April 27, 2014 at Madrone Hospice in Yreka. Bill was born on January 4, 1933 in Colorado Springs, Colorado to Clyde and Elizabeth Overman. He had three sisters who preceded him in death: Norene, Marguerite, and Lenora. He grew up in a household of love that spoiled him as the only son. Bill was raised in Leadville, CO, learning to work hard. He enjoyed hunting, skiing, and fishing. In 1952, he joined the Navy and served 20 years. He retired as a Lieutenant serving on submarines, and as a veteran of the Korean and Vietnam Wars. Bill always had a Navy story to tell, and was proud of the time he spent on submarines as a Naval Officer. In 1972, Bill moved to Yreka and was hired to work at Mount Shasta Title Company. He worked there for 26 years, and retired as the President/CEO. He remained on the Board of Directors until his death. Bill had a reputation as a person who could get things done. In 1999, he decided that he wanted to serve the people of Yreka. He ran for, and subsequently served as Siskiyou County District 4 Supervisor for eight years. Bill was past-President of many community clubs and organizations, including Yreka Lions Club, Montague Rotary Club, Siskiyou County Economic Development Council, Yreka Chamber of Commerce, and the Siskiyou Golden Fair. He was past-Chairman of Klamath Alliance for Resources & Environment (KARE), and Fairchild Medical Center Foundation. Bill was the Yreka Citizen of the Year in 1988. He was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Bill married Martha Rucker of National City, CA on July 4, 1954. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Martha and their three sons: Robert and Kathy, Kenneth, and Glen. Bill and Martha were busy planning their 60th wedding anniversary at the time of his death. Bill leaves behind 7 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Bill would always say that he was grateful that he was born in this great country of ours. He loved his family, his God, and his country; he never hesitated to express his love. He leaves behind many friends. Bill will be remembered as a Patriot, a good friend, and an honest businessman. Bill loved to give hugs and to be hugged…his hugs will be missed. There will be a funeral service for Bill at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Yreka on Friday, May 2, 2014, at 2:00 p.m., with interment and military honors to follow at Evergreen Cemetery.
